Marriage, In-Laws, New Family Leadership for Men

Lead your marriage without losing yourself.

For engaged men, newlyweds, and men in the early years of building a family who want to lead their marriage out of deep conviction rather than automatic reactivity. This family systems coaching works with you one-on-one to help you define a clear self — because when you change how you function, the entire marital system naturally stabilizes. Available in person in Houston and virtually nationwide and internationally.

You lead your marriage instead of being pulled through it.

You navigate in-law dynamics anchored to your core values — not calm-at-all-costs.

You establish your family legacy from principled strength — not inherited reactivity.

The tension in a marriage is rarely just between two people.

When two people marry, two distinct family mobiles intersect. The automatic ways anxiety was managed in your family predictably bump up against the ways anxiety was managed in hers. Expectations about who should take the lead, who’s supposed to accommodate, how emotional closeness and distance is navigated — all of that stems from two completely different multigenerational blueprints. The in-laws come onto the scene, the children are born, and the interlocking triangles emerge before anybody can appreciate the complexity of what is unfolding.

Most men assume the tension is about communication. About finding better tools for the same arguments. But the tension is almost never just between the two of you. It is a reflection of the larger family systems you both emerged from, playing out through automatic reactivity under your own roof.

This approach does not put the marriage under a microscope. Rather, we put the focus on your functioning as an individual (which is, conveniently, the only thing you can control anyway). When you become a more differentiated man — more grounded in your core convictions, less reactive to emotional pressure from any direction, clearer on where you end and others begin — the marriage partnership naturally stabilizes. It does better not because you forced your wife to change — but because you did.

That is the principle. This is the practice.

This approach speaks directly to the man who recognizes himself here.

You are newly married or engaged and are quickly encountering the unexpressed, multigenerational expectations of two colliding family mobiles.

Your in-laws seem to be a frequent source of tension, yet your automatic responses are inadvertently fueling the emotional climate instead of neutralizing it.

You default to absorbing the family anxiety — constantly accommodating and peacekeeping at your own expense.

Your wife has pointed out a reactive pattern in your behavior, and — while you agree with her observation — you're not quite sure where to start.

You find yourself repeating the less-than-ideal relationship dynamics from your family of origin with your wife and kids (even though you swore you wouldn't).

Your marriage does not need couples therapy. It needs you to show up differently.

Most couples therapy attempts to ease marital tension by pushing for greater emotional closeness and more intense communication between the couple. But that’s like throwing gasoline on an already-anxious fire. It may sound counterintuitive, but when a marriage is tense, the couple doesn’t need more marital fusion — they are already intensely emotionally allergic to each other. What they need is greater emotional autonomy.

That’s why this work focuses entirely on your differentiation as an individual man inside the marriage. By learning to manage your own functioning and directing your life energy into your own convictions and pursuits, you introduce a vital element into your home: some much-needed breathing space. Affection suddenly has room to return. And the marriage starts doing better on its own accord.

This work goes somewhere different.

What We Work On

Two people got married. Two family systems walked in with them.

Tension in your home is rarely a private, isolated event; it is the predictable consequence of how the systems you each inherited operate under pressure. This work maps how those two systems interact and strengthens your autonomy as a man within that structure. When you modify your functioning, the entire system naturally recalibrates.

We work on things like:

Your wife experiences a different man in the room.

You stop getting caught in false dilemmas between your family of origin and your wife. The in-law dynamics start to lose their intense grip. You know what you stand for, and you can hold it even when the pressure is on. The whole system around you starts to reorganize to your new level of psychological and emotional maturity. You’re establishing a new, sustainable trajectory for the family you are building — one grounded in principle, not fusion-based reactivity.

What Shifts

WHAT Working Together Looks Like

How it Works

Map

You cannot change what you cannot see. The work begins by mapping out your multigenerational blueprint, because your story is actually part of a much larger one. Together, we build your family diagram across the generations, so you can understand yourself and your reactivity in context — perhaps for the first time.

Locate

With the map visible, you can find out where you are — and where you want to go. This is where we get tactical. At what point do you cut off when the intensity rises? Who gets to stay comfortable because you keep doing their worrying for them? Whose side do you always take during family squabbles? These are your emotional factory settings. Nobody consulted you before installing them — but you finally get a say.

Move

Knowing where you want to go is not the same thing as actually getting there. This is when the work gets real. Not re-hashing old wounds. Not navel-gazing about past traumas. It’s about having the courage to risk showing up differently — in the specific relationships and high-stress situations where it’s hardest to stay yourself. Dr. Murray Bowen had a name for that capacity: differentiation of self. Here, we just call it “the work.”

For Texas counseling clients: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is available when clinically indicated — one tool in the work, not a shortcut around it.

About Me

Why This Work?
Why Work With Me?

"If you can't really be who you are where it matters most, can you really be who you are?"

- James Van Matre, MS, LPC

I did not study this type of work from a distance. I did this work myself, and it changed everything for me.

I spent 10 years working in Catholic ministry before becoming a therapist. I thought I was emotionally healthy. I was functional, I showed up, I served well. And then I did my own Bowen work and I understood something I had never seen before: I was only as mature as my distance from the most difficult people in my family. Every other context, I could be who I wanted to be. But where it was hardest, something deeper took over.

That experience is not background information. It is the whole reason this practice exists.

I work with Catholic and Christian men in leadership who are ready to stop managing their reactivity and start understanding it. I am not here to validate you. I am not here to tell you your parents were toxic or your father is to blame. I am here to help you see the system, understand your place in it, and become someone different inside it.

Grace builds on nature. The psychological work comes first. The rest follows.

Vita Magna is built on these core values:

01

Magnanimity

Live a great life. Lead it with a big soul.

02

Grit

The work is hard. The right clients do it anyway.

03

Integration

Your faith, your psychology, and your family are not separate things.

04

Hospitality

Everyone who walks in is met where they are.

05

Intentionality

Nothing about growth happens by accident.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not really — this approach operates on a different framework.

Traditional couples therapy often focuses on the immediate space between the two partners — the fusion — which can amplify the already-intense emotional reactivity.

Through the natural systems lens, the primary approach is working with you individually, because when one key person changes how he functions, the entire relationship system has to reorganize around that improved functioning.

That said, I do work with couples who are both motivated to look at their own functioning rather than blame their partner. When both spouses are willing to step back from blaming each other and focus instead on their own differentiation, this work can be a powerful joint endeavor.

No. One of the core principles of this work is that it only takes one man to change the entire system.

Think of it as a mobile: when one piece moves with intention, every other piece has to reorganize in response. When you become more psychologically and emotionally mature — more solid in the man you are — the people around you make compensatory adjustments of their own accord.

Fair warning, though: before the system reorganizes, it usually pushes back — Bowen called it the “change back” pressure. When that happens, it's not a sign the work is failing. It's a sign it's landing.

Yes — in fact, engaged men may get the most leverage out of this work of anyone.

A marriage is the intersection of two distinct family systems, and mapping your family of origin's default patterns before the new household locks in its automatic routines is the best timing there is.

Pre-marital coaching through a family systems lens gives you the self-management and relational objectivity to lead your new family with principled intention from day one.

Far more than most men realize.

If families only passed down genetics, I'd be out of a job. The mechanisms your family used to manage anxiety — such as emotional distance, conflict, or over-/under-functioning reciprocity — "travel" with you into your current home (sometimes in unexpected ways).

The routine tension you experience with your in-laws, the default "choice" of who leads versus who accommodates in your marriage, the knee-jerk reactivity when one of your kids acts up — these are rarely just about the immediate situation.

It's the multigenerational emotional process of the past playing into the present.

Creating a family diagram to map this out is part of what brings clarity to these dynamics, so you can thoughtfully choose how to respond to your loved ones rather than reacting to your home life on autopilot.
